Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival is a film awards in the Philippines committed to the development and promotions of Filipino Independent Films. This is where young filmmakers able to express their own concepts and creativity when it comes to film.

When I was in my freshman year I heard about this event but it’s like no big deal for me. It happens during the month of July. We don’t have major subject yet so we’re not required as a masscom student to be part of this event. Every time I go to Mall of Asia, it passes along the Cultural Center of the Philippines and I remember in some way, somehow Cinemalaya catches my attention because of their big posters but just like what I said before, I neglect it for the second time.

Now as a second year student in St. Scholastica’s College Manila having a two major subject which is Principles of Mass Communication and Film Appreciation we are required to watch and support Cinemalaya Independent Films. As I encounter the Opening of Cinemalaya it’s my first time ever. There are so many people out there and my classmates were keep on telling me and to their selves, ‘’I’m tired, I’m hungry!’’ but still it is a best experience though. There are so many artist but I only see Angel Aquino. Our professor said, we need to watch at least one indie film. The first movie that I’ve watched is the Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa featuring Jean Garcia and the two leading actors, Paulo Avelino and Rocco Nacino. I chose this movie because my group mate told me, ‘’I think that movie is good.’’ So I was curious then. The movie ended and all people we’re giving a big hand of applause especially when the woman said in front, ‘’let’s all welcome the Executive producer of this movie Mr. Alvin Yapan. I was really overwhelmed at that very moment. I turned on my camera and started to take him pictures. He said that the only budget for that movie was only P3million. I realized that producing a movie is not an easy thing because you really need enough time and lots of money. It’s not a main stream, it’s just an indie film which I know it’s cheaper but still they spent a million for it. We are all in the outside of the theater and Mr. Yapan was also there. I’m shy to confront him but I was shocked when my friend calls him and ask if he would allow me to take a picture with him. Luckily, he said ‘’yes, of course!’’ I congratulate him for that successful movie and he really inspires me to be a filmmaker someday. The second movie that I’ve watched is the I-Libings featuring Glaiza De Castro. I watched it because it’s for us masscom students who will have an internship next year. The movie does not really help you to find where will you have an internship but somehow it will give you an idea and will make you realize what are the values or lessons will you learn having an internship. The last movie I’ve watched is the Ligo na u, lapit na me by Eric Salud. By watching this film I experienced sitting in the aisle of the theater because so many people were watching and most of them are teens. The story is for us teenagers especially college students. It’s a good movie for me because it’s not an ordinary story, it’ not happy ending.

Being part of this event is an overwhelming feeling for me. I learned something new which I can use for the near future, hard work is one. Cinemalaya also made me realize that age doesn't matter by making a movie. As long as you have the money, time and skills you have the guts to produce. Even though Philippines are now facing the economic crisis, we should be still proud because Filipinos are also the talented ones. It’s my first time and I will never forget this, this Cinemalaya;)
