Different Faces of Cinemalaya. LOL. =] XD |
Before entering a life centered on media and its possibilities, watching or even giving attention on independent films was never an option to me. And so in this year’s Cinemalaya, I have had a blast. It was like being awakened from a deep sleep and finally seeing my path. After I exposed myself in scrutinizing the place, the importance of the film and such, for the first time, I felt sure that, it was in here, in the Mass Communication field, wherein, I know I belong. And I know I made the right choice.
For our Principles of Mass Communication and Film Appreciation Subject, we were obliged to attend The Opening of Cinemalaya Festival and see at least one of the independent films which will be showcased in the festival. Of course I felt thrilled and excited. I have little knowledge about independent films and I know nothing about opening ceremonies of Cinemalaya. Not knowing what to see on the opening, I packed my camera on my bag Friday morning. Funny thing about that day is that, we have classes till 6pm, and the opening would start at 6pm as well. So, most of my classmates did not attend our last subject.
The travel to Cinemalaya was a huge hit for me as well. The line in order to get to the shuttle that will bring us to CCP was a blockbuster. Perhaps, the people who will anticipate the opening would be a mass. True enough, when we reached the theater, the so called air-conditioned hall became a hot place. People from different places filled the area. And you know what? Those people inside the hall, where a mixture of celebrities, independent film makers and producers, reporters and different people from the entertainment industry. But the thing is, since they are not the usual sets of familiar faces (except for those whose face are always exposed in the mob) you’ll bumped into them, without realizing that, they are professionals.
There was this woman, who sat with me on the stairs before the start of the program. I ignored her like the usual, because I thought she was nothing but an audience as well. Besides, with Gretchen Barreto’s presence in the hall, I can no longer look for other faces. Hahaha. I was taken aback by the face of a mannequin. Later on, as the program signals a start, the woman stood up. And to my astonishment, she was called during the roll call of independent directors. I was like, O.O. I should have asked her something that is relevant on the film industry! Or perhaps ask to take a picture with her. LOL.
After the short program in the hall, we proceeded inside the theater. Inside, I played like one of the reporters. Seeing that the reporters where approaching Greta, I sprinted like a road runner and took the opportunity to see her up close. Sadly, she is kind of aloof so I did not get the chance to ask her for a picture.
Second, I went where the reporters went next, to Laurice Guillen’s side. And like no other student in the theater, I was face to face with her, hearing what she is saying while the GMA reporter extracts info from her. I took a video as well, for souvenir purpose. :P
With that, the movie started. It was about Johnny Delgado’s life before death. Rather, it was about how the people close to him had seen and appreciates him as a person. The movie was touching and full of meaning. It was plain and has less effort on visual effects, but it would touch one’s heart. The movie, especially at the hospital and the scene of Miles Ocampo, stroked my heart. I was reminded of how noble my grandmother is. With her imperfections and all, the fact that she loved us dearly would always linger in our hearts even though she passed away already. Oh by the way, I want to credit the independent film. Being an independent film, its quality is already almost like a mainstream.

Busy People of Cinemalaya :) |
Sunday, I went back to CCP again to watch Ang Babae sa Septic Tank. This time, my trip went smoothly and the theater, not hot anymore, was friendly again. The movie was so fun that I want to watch it the second time around. Eugene Domingo is excellent in portraying the role of Mila as well as the rookie artists who worked with her on the film. Hahaha, just by reminiscing about the film makes me want to roll on the floor again, literally. After watching, I went to explore the theater. That second day was the only day that I discovered the museums, or I call them that. They are overflowing with auras, with knowledge preserve and with unexplainable beauty. I love taking pictures of the masterpieces hanging on every corners of the hall. It was so magnificent in my eyes.
Friday the following week, I went back to CCP again, for the group pictures. I spent little time but the expression that the Cinemalaya left me was extravagant that I find myself awed again. We took picture at the grand stair and with the big, and sparkling Cinemalaya banner, or whatever it is called. Therefore, I conclude that my first ever Cinemalaya experience was fun and enjoyable. It was a blast.
